Gentle, natural healing that treats the root cause.
Homoeopathy was discovered by German physician Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann
(1755–1843) in the late eighteenth century.
Homoeopathy took root in India in 1839 when Dr. John Martin Honigberger successfully treated
Maharaja Ranjit Singh for paralysis of the vocal cords. Dr. Honigberger settled in Calcutta and
became popular as the "Cholera doctor". Later, Dr. M. L. Sirkar, a reputed physician of his time,
also started practicing Homoeopathy.
It is a therapeutic system of medicine premised on the principle "Similia Similibus Curentur", or
'let likes be treated by likes' — diamond cuts diamond. A homeopath inquires into the cause
behind the trouble and goes to the root of the disease.
Homoeopathy works as a preventive and helps maintain the healthy state of the individual.
Medicines can be given as prophylactics. Homoeopathy works by stimulating and restoring the
body's immune system, protecting you from future troubles as well.
Homoeopathic medicines are prepared from traces of animal, plant, mineral and other natural
substances by a standard method called dynamisation or potentisation, comprising successive
dilutions and succussions to raise the inherent curative power of the drugs to a maximum.
Homoeopathy is very safe, even for pregnant women and babies. Homoeopathic medicines can be taken
along with other medications without causing adverse interactions or reactions. Medicines are
usually proved on healthy human beings to ascertain their curative properties. The physician
perceives all the derangements at the physical and mental levels of the patient, builds a
conceptual image of the patient through the totality of symptoms, and selects the medicine
accordingly.
Homoeopathic medicines are cost effective, palatable, free of adverse side effects and easy to
administer. Homoeopathy has proven useful in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders, autoimmune
diseases, paediatric disorders, ailments during pregnancy, obstinate skin diseases, lifestyle
disorders and allergies — and even in otherwise incurable chronic diseases like cancer,
AIDS and rheumatoid arthritis.
Common myths, clarified
Many scientific clinical trials have proved that homeopathic medicines are far above the placebo effect. The curative effect of homeopathic medicine has been observed in millions of cases with wonderful results, so saying that Homeopathy is a placebo is irrational.
The white pills are only neutral vehicles or carriers of the actual medicine that is sprinkled on them.
Not really. Homeopathic medicines act rapidly and the effect lasts much longer, as the disease is eradicated from its roots. The time taken for relief depends on the chronicity of the disease.
Homeopathic medicines are absorbed from the tongue and the inner lining of the mouth, hence patients are asked not to eat or drink anything 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after taking the medicine.
Yes. Homeopathic medicines can be taken along with other medications without any fear of side effects and complications.
Homeopathic medicines do not contain glucose (which is harmful for diabetics). They are made with a complex sugar called lactose, and can also be taken in liquid form.
It definitely is. Homoeopathy is based on sound logic and vast experimental data. It is the only medicinal science where data has been collected by proving on human beings and not on animals, because human beings can communicate their actual feelings during testing. Homoeopathic medicines are prepared in a standardized manner, and the Homoeopathic pharmacopoeia lists more than 3,000 remedies whose clinical efficacy has been proved in various clinical trials conducted worldwide.
The duration of treatment depends upon the nature of the disease and the fighting capacity of the patient's body. The time taken for relief is proportionate to the chronicity of the ailment.
There are many incidents that influence our life. Knowing them gives an idea about the patient as a person, their characteristics, nature, complaints, peculiar habits, past medical history, childhood details, and disturbed mental and emotional state, helping the physician prescribe the accurate remedy.
The name of the medicine is not disclosed for the benefit of the patient. Certain medicines have to be changed and given as per the state of the disease and recovery — disclosing the name upfront could distort the disease picture and make future treatment more difficult.
Yes. Pathological investigations are also important to know the disease diagnosis and prognosis, and to judge improvement.
Yes. Homeopathy has wonderful remedies that give prompt relief in acute cases like fever, cough, cold, diarrhoea and headaches, when the person opts for homeopathy at the onset of the ailment.
Yes, it does. Surgery is a separate branch of medicine, resorted to in conditions beyond the domain of medicine. But in certain cases surgery can be avoided, as homeopathy can effectively treat many so-called surgical conditions like tonsillitis, piles, warts and kidney stones.
No, there are no side effects of homeopathic medicines. Sometimes you may get a cold, skin rash, or old symptoms may reappear after taking homeopathic medicines — this means the system is getting cleared. Do not take any medicine to treat these reappearing old symptoms, as they will go away in a short while and you will be healed for a long-lasting period.
